Media advisory: Campaign Life Coalition calls for protection of mentally ill from MAiD

Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) will be participating in a rally and press conference on Parliament Hill on Tuesday, February 27 at 11 AM in the wake of the Federal Government’s decision to pause the expansion of euthanasia to the mentally ill with Bill C-62.

“While we accept this delay, the fact is that euthanasia solely on the grounds of mental illness should never have been legally permitted in the first place,” said CLC national president Jeff Gunnarson. “Those suffering from mental illness need compassionate care, not killing.”

“The implementation of euthanasia for the mentally ill must not simply be delayed for three years, it must be entirely stopped,” he added.

CLC will be joining the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC) and Quebec Life Coalition for this event along with other legal and medical experts. MP Ed Fast will also be present at the event. Mr. Fast was the sponsor of Bill C-314 (Mental Health Protection Act). Had it passed, it would have prevented medical assistance in dying (MAID) for mental illness alone.

CLC will call on Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre to fulfil his promise to revoke the expansion of euthanasia to the mentally ill.

“Mr. Poilievre must fulfil his promises, made on various occasions, to repeal the extension of euthanasia to the mentally ill, should he come into power,” said Gunnarson. “We call on concerned Canadians to hold Mr. Poilievre accountable to his promise.”

When: Tuesday, February 27, 2024, 11 AM

Where: Parliament Hill (outside)

Who: Campaign Life Coalition, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, and Quebec Life Coalition
